The Comox Valley is one of the best places in one of the best countries in the world. But like everywhere, we have challenges, and we need realistic, achievable, cost-effective solutions.

That’s why I am running for Courtenay Council.

If elected, I will:

• in the first 100 days, introduce Council motions that will lower your property tax burden, reduce criminal and anti-social behaviour, and keep our kids and seniors safe as they walk in our city;

• explain my decisions in writing to voters on a weekly basis;

• work collaboratively with Council members from across the political spectrum to achieve solutions, because nothing succeeds at Council without at least four votes.

I will not:

• vote for any development proposal that will negatively affect Courtenay residents, taxpayers, or the local environment.

These policies will ensure a more affordable, safer, and more livable Courtenay, and one that is better prepared for climate change, the Trump regime, and other threats to our city and valley. And I’m running a self-funded, low-cost campaign, so will not accept your donations. Instead, please give to our many local, hardworking non-profits and charities.

About John Dacombe

I have lived all over North America and traveled over much of the world, and in my experience the Comox Valley is one of the best places in one of the best nations on the planet.

Career

I spent the bulk of my career in the Regular Canadian Forces and then the federal government, and I worked for years at the strategic level, so I understand how governments operate.

Before I joined the military I worked many poorly paid jobs, so I know what it’s like to have to choose between paying the rent and buying groceries.

Education

Besides military courses and training, I have a BA (Honours) History (Summa Cum Laude) from the University of Ottawa.

Relevant Volunteering

I’ve lived full-time in Courtenay since 2021 and am active in my community: I’m a member of many non-profits, was a Director on the Board of the Comox Valley Land Trust until I stepped down when I decided to run, a member of the Comox Valley Sewer Service Liquid Waste Management Plan advisory committee from 2024-2026, and was Editor-in-Chief of The Puntledge News, the Comox Valley’s #1 (ok, only) satire news site (over 40 million views!), from 2022-2026.

Politics

Politically, I’m a moderate, neither left nor right, and do not belong to any parties, movements or slates, formal or informal.

I respect anyone from across the political spectrum who has reasoned, informed, fact-based policy positions.
